Sir William Charles Ross was a miniature painter who had studied at the Royal Academy schools before becoming an assistant to the miniaturist Andrew Robertson. He went on to establish a large and successful practice of his own and was patronised both by the royal family and by leading aristocratic families. This miniature was painted by his brother Hugh.
