This work was in its current poor condition when it was purchased by the Gallery in 1936. Stylistically it appears to date from the seventeenth century and, unusually, it is executed in watercolour. Given its small scale it was probably not intended for use as a transferable pattern for the immediate production of portraits but was instead used as a reference. It may well have once formed part of an artist's copy-book because demand for portraits of prominent sixteenth-century courtiers remained high in the seventeenth century.
