During the reign of Henry VIII, Brandon, a soldier and statesman, led three invasions of France: in 1513, 1523 and 1544. He supported Henry's efforts to obtain a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and was steward of his household. He also secretly wed Henry VIII's sister Mary, widow of Louis XII, in Paris in 1515, despite the fact that he was already married. In this portrait Brandon, who is seated, has a poesy of flowers in his left hand and the glove which he has doffed is in his right.
