Admiral Sir Peter Warren took Louisbourg in the West Indies from the French in 1745. A Member of Parliament for Westminster, (1747-52), his monument in Westminster Abbey is by Roubiliac. This portrait is one of three of Warren which, according to a payment made by his widow after his sudden death in July 1752, Hudson painted in 1751 or 1752 at a total cost of £114.19s; this sum probably included the frames. This frame to this portrait is of a style favoured by the artist in the 1750s and is a somewhat gauche English translation of a contemporary French frame type.
