Wentworth served both Henry VIII and his son Edward VI. Having embraced Protestantism and supported Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon in 1530, Wentworth served as Edward's Lord Chamberlain. It would appear that this portrait was begun just before his appointment to the office and that the white rod of the Lord Chancellor was a later addition. In the bottom left-hand corner there is a small lap dog reclining on a carpet.
