This is one of three studies by Ward for his caricature of Whistler published over the title A Symphony in the society magazine, Vanity Fair, on 12 January 1878. It shows Whistler with monocle and hand defiantly on hip. In the finished print he holds a cigarette and maulstick in his other hand.
