Wilkie and Hunt likely first met prodigy Edwin Landseer at Heydon's studio while studying with Branwell Bronte's later 'Best Friend' J B Leyland. In 1824 Wilkie persuaded 21 y/o Landseer to visit the Highlands and Sir Walter Scott. By 1827 Hunt (via John Linnel) introduced Landseer to among his most consequential friendships; William Cavendish, 6th duke Devonshire.
