This portrait was formerly thought to represent Henry Benedict Stuart, the younger brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the 'young pretender'. Henry Benedict grew up in Italy where he became a Cardinal, and this portrait, painted by an Italian artist, represents a man in cardinal's robes. However there is no strong evidence to identify the sitter. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
