Working as a freelancer for Harper's Bazaar, Farson accompanied critic Kenneth Tynan to the Edinburgh Festival to photograph Richard Burton who was appearing in Hamlet. This was Burton's debut as the lead in the Old Vic Company production, starring opposite Claire Bloom. The Welsh-born actor became renowned for his Shakespearean roles before starring in numerous Hollywood films.
