William Carpenter, the son of the Bond Street bookseller and art dealer James Carpenter, was appointed as the Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in 1845. In 1816 he was painted by the portraitist Margaret Geddes and they married in the following year. As a young woman, financial assistance from Lord Radnor enabled the artist to move to London where she won a series of prizes from the Society of Arts. Acknowledged as one of the leading portraitists of the period, during her lifetime Margaret Carpenter exhibited 156 pictures at the Royal Academy.
