Gladys Cooper appeared on stage from 1905 and in films from 1914, and managed the Playhouse (1922-33). Her notable stage successes included The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1922) and The Chalk Garden (1955, 1971). In 1940 a Hollywood career which would last thirty years began with a small role in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca. She is seen in this portrait wearing a bandeau, a piece of jewellery greatly in vogue during the Art Deco period.
