A scholar specialising in Shakespeare, Frank Earnest Halliday was also an amateur painter and a close friend of Day-Lewis. They met at Cheltenham College, where Halliday was Assistant Master and where Day-Lewis taught (1930-5). The portrait was made in 1936, the year after Day-Lewis left Cheltenham to become a full-time writer.
