In 1922 William Roberts married Sarah Kramer, who was born in Leeds after her family had come to England by boat from the Ukraine in 1900. Involved with the Omega Workshops and Vorticism, Roberts developed his own rather Cubist style, traces of which may still be discerned in this late work. His self-portrait centres on a folded letter, perhaps a love letter to his beloved wife Sarah: there is a secret complicity in their joint concentration.
