Like Sir Henry Taylor, the celebrated novelist combined his literary work with that of a civil servant: in Trollope's case a postal official. Cameron took this photograph of him in October, 1864, when he was on holiday at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight and during a crisis in his career at the post office. Following the retirement of his enemy Sir Rowland Hill, Trollope had been passed over for promotion and was himself to retire two years later.
