This medal was produced to mark Lord Samuel's 90th birthday. It is inscribed, 'HERBERT VISCOUNT SAMUEL O.M.' (Order of Merit, an honour bestowed on Samuel in 1958). The reverse shows a figure, perhaps of Truth, writing in a book and holding a beacon, with the inscription, 'AMICVS SOCRATES SED MAGIS AMICA VERITAS' (Socrates is my friend but a greater friend is truth), from Roger Bacon's Opus Majus, and indirectly from Aristotle. Vincze had previously portrayed Lord Samuel in a portrait plaque exhibited in 1943.
