Son of George V and Queen Mary; reigned January-December 1936. Edward was commissioned in the Guards during the First War, but prevented from serving as a fighting soldier. During the 1920s and 1930s his concern for the unemployed at home and his travels throughout the empire made him a popular figure. His abdication followed insoluble constitutional problems raised by his proposed marriage to the American divorcée, Wallis Simpson.
