The cartoonist 'Vicky' dubbed him 'Supermac', which gave him folk-hero status. This cartoon has a valedictory air. Macmillan had acquired a taste for shooting game from his father-in-law, the Duke of Devonshire, and, as the historian Robert Blake put it, he did "genuinely enjoy shooting and made himself into a proficient, if slightly over-dressed, performer". Something of this has been caught here by Mark.
