Vincent Novello was an organist, conductor, composer, editor and arranger of music. Born of London of an Italian father and English mother, he became the organist of the Portuguese Embassy Chapel at the age of sixteen. His success brought him an offer from George IV of a similar post at Brighton Pavilion but he declined owing to his numerous commitments in London. In 1811 he published a selection of his music as performed at the Chapel, and this laid the foundation of Novello and Co., the famous music publishing house. His house in Oxford Street was the meeting place for many well-known figures in the world of arts and letters, including the writers Charles and Mary Lamb and the poets Keats and Shelley. In this group portrait painted by his son Edward, he is shown surrounded by some of his eleven children. His wife, Mary Sabilla Hehl, sits on the far right, and their daughter Clara, the singer, stands at his right.
