Julia Margaret Cameron, the wife of a colonial civil servant, lived in Calcutta where she was a leading figure in colonial society. Leaving India in the 1850s, she and her husband settled in England and became friendly with leading literary and artistic figures including Alfred Tennyson and George Frederic Watts. Known for her imperiousness and eccentric habits, Cameron took up photography in her late forties and produced some of the most acclaimed photographs in the history of the medium. An accomplished translator and an avid letter-writer, she is seen in this portrait with two of her sons and a quill in hand.
