Called to the bar in 1811, Stanley Lees Giffard went on to become the first editor of the Standard (later The Evening Standard) in 1827, and of the St James's Chronicle. His son Hardinge, who stands before the table in this portrait, was also called to the bar and rose quickly in his profession. Knighted in 1875, he was later made lord chancellor (1885-6; 1886-92 and 1895-1905). This family portrait shows Stanley Lees Giffard with his second wife, Mary Anne.
