Commissioned by the artist's father, Sir George Frampton, this portrait marked the sitter's presidency of Dr Barnardo's Homes. Sir George, also an artist, had made a memorial to Barnardo in 1908 and was actively involved in the provision of works of art for the Barnardo Homes. Sittings for the portrait took place in Meredith Frampton's studio in St John's Wood, London. George VI, painted while he was Duke of York, is shown in the full dress uniform of a Royal Navy Captain.
