This panel is one of the earliest surviving portraits of England's shortest-reigning monarch, Lady Jane Grey. It was not painted from the life, or indeed made during Jane Grey's lifetime, but is a commemorative image created some forty years after her death. It may have formed part of a set of Protestant martyrs. Scratched lines across the eyes and mouth suggests that the painting was the subject of an iconoclastic attack at some point in its history.
