This painting was commissioned by the sitter and is one of three related portraits. The Gallery commissioned a portrait of Stephen Hawking by Yolanda Sonnabend in 1985. In contrast to the Sonnabend portrait, which depicts a young man at the outset of his reputation, Cuming's portrait, with its tenebrous quality, evokes the sitter in his maturity.
