When Conrad visited the United States in 1923, he was one of the most famous living authors writing in the English language. When he arrived, he was confronted by press photographers: 'to be aimed at by forty cameras held by forty men that look as if they came in droves is a nerve-shattering experience'. Annan is one of the great artist-photographers of the early twentieth century.
