The Blitz continues with sustained Luftwaffe attacks on British cities. As the bombing went on the urban population got used to the black out, the air raid sirens and nights spent in shelter. The idea emerged (to some extent a myth) of the 'spirit of the Blitz' where people pulled together united, disregarding traditional class and social divisions.Art and science
Frank Whittle demonstrates the first test-flight of a plane powered by jet propulsion. Although the German, Hans von Ohain, built the first jet plane, Whittle was the first to patent a design for the jet engine (in 1930), and his subsequent work helped to advance the technology and made Britain leaders in the field.International
The Soviet Union and America join the Allies. The Soviet Union was forced to switch sides after Hitler attacked in June 1941, reneging the Soviet-Nazi pact. Six months later the US Navy was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbour. The following day the USA declared war on Japan, and three days later Germany and Italy declared war on America.Comments back to top

Dear sirs! I would like to draw your attention to several inaccurate details in the information accompanying the published photo.
The last person on the right is Kirill Vasilyevich Novikov, who is my grandfather. The dates of his life are 18 March, 1905 – 14 October, 1983. He served as an Counsellor to the USSR Embassy in Great Britain from February, 1941 till August, 1942. In August, 1942 he among others was in the Mission of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill in his inspection trip to Cairo and then he went to Moscow, in order to meet with Stalin. Upon coming to the USSR, K.V. Novikov was appointed to a higher position and never came back to London.
As for the period, when the photo was taken, it may be either summer of 1941 or summer of 1942.
K.V. Novikov made a considerable contribution into the development of diplomatic relations of the USSR in general and with Great Britain in particular. He was the General Secretary of the Soviet Delegations at the conferences in Yalta (February, 1945) and Potsdam (July – August, 1945) of the countries that had won the 2nd World War. He was also a participant of the conference held in San-Francisco dedicated to the foundation of the United Nations Organization (April – June, 1945) and signed among others the UN Charter on behalf of the Russian Federation. He was the first Ambassador of the USSR in India (1947-1953).
Sincerely yours

Spelling of Novikov other names, your article spells Vasilyevich, Maisky Diaries (edited by Gabriel Gorodetsky) spells it less the Y, ….Vasilevich is there a reason for this ?
