Art and science

1922 is a key year for modernist literature with the publication of James Joyce's novel, Ulysses and T.S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land. Both broke new ground with Ulysses (loosely based on Homer's Odyssey) introducing the 'stream of consciousness' narrative technique, and The Waste Land experimenting with multiple voices and a patchwork of literary, historic, mythological and personal allusions.

Sir Oswald Birley painted Princess Mary's portrait c.1922 - the year she married Henry Lascelles, Viscount Lascelles. Around the same time, Birley painted the portrait of Charles Lupton who, in 1918, was Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire when Princess Mary's father-in-law, Henry Lascelles, 5th Earl of Harewood, was his Lord Lieutenant. On 27th July 1927, at the Headingley Cricket Ground, near Leeds, Princess Mary was photographed as guest of honour at a garden party. The procession of dignitaries which followed her included Charles Lupton's brother, Leeds Lord Mayor Hugh Lupton and his wife Isabella Lupton, the Lady Mayoress. Their niece, Olive Middleton (nee Lupton) was also photographed as one of the dignitaries in the procession walking behind Princess Mary. Olive had been on the Princess's fundraising committee for the Leeds Infirmary and her husband, Noel Middleton, had co-founded the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra with both the Princess and her son George Lascelles as patrons. Noel Middleton had attended soirees at Harewood House on the the Harewood Estate whose tenants had presented Birley's portrait to Viscount Lascelles as a wedding gift. In 1928, Birley painted a portrait of Princess Mary's father - King George V - for the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.
