Charles Wodsworth was born 21 Feb 1785 in Calcutta, India, the illegitimate but recognised son of William Dudley Wodsworth and 'Mrs Oliver'. William (d.1791) was a senior East India Merchant of Calcutta, later Balasore through the 1770's and 1780's, also Sheriff of Calcutta.
Charles was educated at St. Paul's School, London and Cambridge University and ordained at Norwich. He married Jane Sayers, daughter of a Norfolk Merchant in 1815. He was Curate of Griston, Norfolk, Northbourne, Kent, South Lambeth Chapel, London and Rector of Ingoldisthorphe, Norfolk, also domestic chaplain to William Earl Harcourt. He lectured at St. Vedast and St Olave Jewry and was later Prebendary of Portpool, St. Paul's Cathedral, Vicar of Hardingstone, Northpamptonshire and Audley, Staffordshire.
Of his two surviving sons, John George (b.1816) joined the clergy and Dudley Clifton(b. c1826) was an army surgeon.
