Ethel Wright was a society portrait painter who supported the suffrage cause and this work was first shown at the Women's Exhibition in London,a spectacular fundraising event which highlighted women's skills and potential. Pankhurst is portrayed as a figurehead of the movement, wearing a sash in the distinctive purple, white and green colours of the Women's Social and Political Union.
