Ethel Wright was a society portrait painter who supported the suffrage cause and this work was first shown at the Women's Exhibition in London, a spectacular fundraising event which highlighted women's skills and potential. Pankhurst is portrayed as a figurehead of the movement, wearing a sash in the distinctive purple, white and green colours of the Women's Social and Political Union.
