The Firebird premiered in London on 18 June 1912. Composed by Igor Stravinsky, the ballet was the first collaboration between the twenty eight year old composer and Diaghilev's company. Karsavina danced the title role with Adolph Bolm as Ivan Tsarevich. The ballet, inspired by Russian folk tales, told the story of a magical bird that brought good fortune as well as a curse to its captor. Léon Bakst's striking costumes were a sensation at the time.
