The artist builds up thin layers of paint to achieve a remarkable level of detail in his work. Each stitch of the sweatshirt is individually painted (82,000 brush strokes). Keen to include landscape in some way, in the white of the sitter's eye Gaskell has painted the reflected image of Lovelock's Cornish home.
