Sittings for this portrait began in 2011, and took place in between Dame Maggie's filming commitments. Informally dressed, she is shown sitting on a purpose-built trompe-l'oeil platform at the painter's studio in Southwark. Lloyd chose to portray the actress in a frank, contemporary style, a contrast to the manner in which she appears for film and television roles.
