This drawing marks the difference between Crane's costumed appearance and his contemporary self-image. This thoughtful portrait by Flora Lion, who had a successful career painting society figures, was made towards the end of Walter Crane's life. Her drawing conveys the still dapper character of the man, who was now an established figure in the British art world. With his distinctive, jaunty moustache, Crane was known for his enjoyment of dressing up and the flamboyant, bohemian persona he projected as an artist.
