Eliot was photographed by American photographer Platt Lynes in 1947 as a commission for Vogue. Eliot's thoughts on the portraits are revealed in a letter he wrote to the photographer in September 1947 in which he describes them as 'very good indeed' and comments that 'the total effect gives me an impression that I look like a moderately good film actor in a variety of parts.'
