'Somerset Maugham whose portrait I sculptured in 1951 reminded me strongly of some old Roman patrician' wrote Epstein in his Autobiography. 'In spite of his fastidious and aloof expression he proved a model sitter... We would leave the studio door open while a friend played Mozart on the piano, much to his delight. He once came in for a sitting from an Embassy luncheon accompanied by a tall, stately princess who was, I think, very dismayed at the dusty disorder of my studio'.
