In 1879, the Art Journal proclaimed that 'Nearly every member of the royal family has been photographed by Mr. Bassano [...] The list includes the younger branches – the hopes of a distant future.' Such pictures contributed to the public image of a domestic royal family that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert aimed to foster, in contrast to the marital infidelities and aristocratic excesses of previous monarchs. They represented the middle-class Victorian family ideals with which the public could identify. The children are shown dressed in the nautical fashion that was commonplace for Victorian children.
