Here the teaching staff at Camberwell are shown relaxing over a pub lunch. Writing in Private View (1965) critic John Russell wrote: ‘At Camberwell, you never forget that painters and sculptors are people who work with their hands, not philosophers who happen to come into the studio from time to time’. Bryan Robertson added that many artists taught for reasons of social responsibility as well as economic pressure and to find a fraternal community.
