the chair that the gentleman on the left is sitting in is known as a Roorkhee chair, an invention of the British army as a chair that can easily be disassembled for travel. These campaign chairs have seen something of a resurgence in popularity over the course of the 20th century, leading to Kaare Klint's Safari Chair as a most direct descendant, and further through the century to derivatives such as the Charles Pollock leather sling chair. Currently the originals are experiencing popularity in the USA where woodworkers are making copies inspired by Christopher Schwarz' book and DVD about these chairs.
