Current affairs

The British Broadcasting Company (later British Broadcasting Corporation) is established to experiment with radio broadcasting. It is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world, providing radio, television and Internet services to the public in Britain and across the world.

Art and science

1922 is a key year for modernist literature with the publication of James Joyce's novel, Ulysses and T.S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land. Both broke new ground with Ulysses (loosely based on Homer's Odyssey) introducing the 'stream of consciousness' narrative technique, and The Waste Land experimenting with multiple voices and a patchwork of literary, historic, mythological and personal allusions.

International

The Soviet Union is formed under Joseph Stalin who takes power after Lenin suffers a debilitating stroke.
In an attempt to avoid civil war, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy invites Benito Mussolini to form a new government following the Fascist Party's March on Rome.

What is remarkable about George Jones is his sheer ability and determination. At 16 in the 1891 Census he is described as a tailor, and the 1911 indicates that his brother Montague Lacey Jones (born 1884) would go on to be Secretary of Jones & Co of London, Tailors. But according to the 1921 edition of Who’s Who, George would enrol to study law at the University of London emerging with a First Class degree. By 1907 he had been called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn.

George Jones was born in Taunton on 30 October 1874. There is information about George Jones in the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses. The 1939 Register also reveals much about him. His father was George Jones who lived in Exeter. His mother was Sarah Lacey whose mother was my great-great grandmother Catherine Lacey. The Joneses and the Laceys were involved with tailoring. The Jones family moved from Exeter to Hackney in Middlesex by 1881. It is likely that by 1901 George had become a Merchant Taylor for his occupation is described as such in the 1901 Census for 43 Ickburgh Road Hackney.
