Born in St Petersburg, Russia, and educated at Cambridge and the Sorbonne, De Grunwald was the son of a Tsarist diplomat, and escaped to Britain as a child during the Russian Revolution. He turned from journalism to screenwriting with scripts for Terence Rattigan's French Without Tears and 'Pimpernel' Smith. McBean photographed him at the time of the filming of another Rattigan play, The Winslow Boy, which Grunwald produced and adapted and which McBean had comprehensively photographed during its stage run. McBean photographed a number of other film directors, including Brian Desmond Hurst and David Lean, as well as making a collage portrait of Alfred Hitchcock when he was filming Stagefright.
