The occasion was a celebration of Lowry's 77th birthday at an exhibition at Monks Hall Museum, Eccles, for which artists had been asked to submit a work. The only one to refuse was Graham Sutherland. Lowry is seen with John F.W. Bryon, librarian at Eccles and later at Salford University; Gerald W. Brookes Cotton, Borough Librarian of Swinton and Pendlebury and from 1966, City Librarian of Salford; Frank Mullineaux, Keeper of Monks Hall Museum. Lowry stands in front of a painting by Carel Weight. The photograph was taken for Tillotsons Newspapers Ltd.
