Humorist and entertainer, Cook, with his business partner Nicholas Luard, purchased Private Eye in 1962, at the time he was appearing in Beyond the Fringe in New York. Following the departure of Private Eye's first editor, Christopher Booker in 1963, Cook turned round the fortunes of the magazine with financial and creative input. He contributed less when working on other aspects of his career, such as the TV series Not Only...But Also (with Dudley Moore, 1964-70), but was respected as an inspired genius by editors Richard Ingrams and Ian Hislop.
Photographed outside 18 Greek Street, where Cook opened the Establishment Club in October 1961.
