Current affairs

The British Broadcasting Company (later British Broadcasting Corporation) is established to experiment with radio broadcasting. It is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world, providing radio, television and Internet services to the public in Britain and across the world.

Art and science

1922 is a key year for modernist literature with the publication of James Joyce's novel, Ulysses and T.S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land. Both broke new ground with Ulysses (loosely based on Homer's Odyssey) introducing the 'stream of consciousness' narrative technique, and The Waste Land experimenting with multiple voices and a patchwork of literary, historic, mythological and personal allusions.

International

The Soviet Union is formed under Joseph Stalin who takes power after Lenin suffers a debilitating stroke.
In an attempt to avoid civil war, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy invites Benito Mussolini to form a new government following the Fascist Party's March on Rome.

Dr Robert Guyver

I know something of the early life of George Jones as he was a cousin of my grandmother, Elizabeth Mabel Roach, whose mother was Jessie Lacey. Sarah Lacey was George Jones's mother, sister of my great-grandmother (Jessie Lacey). Sarah Lacey married George's father and they were tailors, initially in Exeter (where I live) but they moved around the Westcountry, to Honiton, Taunton (where George was born) and South Molton, before they moved to Hackney. They settled in Darenth Road in Hackney. George and his brother Montague were part of the family tailoring business, but in his late twenties George decided he would like to start studying to be a lawyer. He studied for an external law degree at the University of London and at the same time studied at one of the Inns of Court. He had already been a Councillor in London, but became a long-serving MP for Stoke Newington with only one short break. He was knighted in 1928. His speeches can be found online in the Hansard records. He never married and lived with brother Montague and a cousin, Kate Lacey. His story is one of considerable social mobility, mainly through gaining qualifications in his own time. Clearly his mastery of law and of the English language assisted his career.
