Mayne photographed this play meeting Jellicoe for the first time. Mayne attended a writers group run by David Piper's wife Ann Piper, which included Ann Jellicoe. They married in 1962. This photograph was taken in the year in which Jellicoe's play The Knack was staged, which described the shifting relationships and power balances between four young people. Other plays include The Rising Generation (1967) and The Giveaway (1968).
