The Great Britain Women's Curling Team triumphed over their Swiss opponents in the 2002 Winter Olympics to become the first Britons to win gold medals at the Winter Olympics since Torvill and Dean's skating success in 1984. Originating in Scotland in the Middle Ages, curling involves sliding granite stones across ice towards a target. This portrait shows the team posing during the medal ceremonies at the Salt Lake City Games. Team captain Rhona Martin (centre) is flanked left to right by team members Fiona MacDonald, Janice Rankin, Debbie Knox and Margaret Morton.
