Nollekens made a fortune carving busts of Fox for his political supporters. This one, inscribed with a verse celebrating the politician's qualities, was presented to Fox's secret wife Mrs Armistead in 1796 by Earl Fitzwilliam an ardent 'Foxite'. It was displayed in the 'Temple of Friendship' at the couple's country house, St Anne's Hill.
