For Conroy, the elusive single figure is a theme he constantly re-visits and this etching is a study for a self-portrait painting, exhibited in 2003 at Marlborough Fine Art, New York. As an admirer of the Scottish artist, James Cowie, Conroy's work is characteristically exact and studied in contrast to much Scottish painting.
