Current affairs

Following the death of his father George V, Edward succeeds to the throne as King Edward VIII, but chooses to abdicate in order to marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. Edward was the only monarch every to voluntarily relinquish the throne.

Art and science

The Spitfire, designed by Reginald Mitchell, has its maiden flight. The RAF and other allied forces used the plane extensively and to great effect during the Second World War.
Television broadcasting begins. Although the BBC had been transmitting television since 1930, regular service did not begin until 1936, when the 'BBC Television Service' (now BBC One) was broadcast from Alexandra Palace.

International

The Spanish Civil War begins. Nationalists, led by General Francisco Franco, and supported by Italian and German fascist governments, rebelled against the Second Spanish Republic. The conflict lasted until 1939, and anticipated many of the features of the Second World War: fighting between Communists and Fascists, the rise of nationalism and the use of terror tactics against civilians.

I also went to the Fritham School in the New Forest from 1958 until1960. Many good memories especially of Sir Timothy. I still am in touch with a close friend from Fritham. She and I both ended up immigrating to the US in the 60's. She now lives in Australia and I live in a small coastal community just North of Boston.

Dear Sirs, I believe I went to Sir Timothy and Lady Eden's boarding school Fritham House in the New Forest near Lyndhurst. Lady Eden herself was the head of the school at that time and was wonderful. I have many fond memories of that period of time back in the 60's and wish I could find photographs of that period. Several of my friends are still alive and it would be nice to connect. Also to know what did indeed happen to the school and to Lady Patricia Eden herself. I was originally from New York City and our family moved to London in 1962. I attended private school in London with my sister and then we went to Fritham House after a year or two. The New Forest is magnificent and I grew to love the area. Many years later my then fiance and I both from New York, returned to the Untited States. I shall never forget the teachings I learned under the strong guidance of Lady Eden and Fritham House School. God bless them all.
