Current affairs

Prince Charles and George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham urge James I, the peacemaking king, to declare war on Spain and summon an equally war hungry Parliament, to secure a subsidy for war. Lord Treasurer Lionel Cranfield in opposition to conflict, is duly impeached.

Art and science

The acting troupe, The King's Men, perform Thomas Middleton's satire A Game at Chess at the Globe Theatre, London, until it is suppressed in view of its allusions to the Spanish Match.
The Berwick Bridge, spanning the River Tweed, is completed by James Burrell.

International

Diplomat James Hay, Earl of Carlisle, begins arrangements in Paris for a marriage alliance between Charles, Prince of Wales and Louis XIII's sister, Henrietta Maria. The union would secure political allegiance between both countries whose principle aims were restoration of Frederick V in the Palatinate and restriction of Spanish expansion.
