International

The Suez Crisis rocked Eden's premiership and marked the decline of British world power and influence in favour of America. In 1956 President Nasser of Egypt nationalised the Suez canal. Although Britain and France, who had owned the canal since the 19th century, invaded Egypt, they were soon persuaded to withdraw by US President Eisenhower who disapproved of the occupation.

Born in India Eva moved in London artistic society for 60 years, knowing among many Oscar Wilde and Mountstuart William Elphinstone, the Royal Photographer. By 1911 she was secretary of the Imperial Rifle Club Westminster. During the First War she was engaged by the Ministry of Munitions Inspectorate of Factories and knew both Lloyd George and the Prince of Wales. Post War with friend, the actress Helen Haye she aided many in the Arts including a young Noel Coward, before eventually running an international Bridge Club in London. Although tiny she was a great fisherwoman. She died in 1973.
