This is one of a large collection of original studies for Vanity Fair, which were all owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Bazley was published in Vanity Fair as a coloured lithograph, on 21 August 1875, with the title, 'Manchester', and the signature of 'Ape'.

Healthy complexion, white hair and whiskers, black top-hat. Dressed in a black coat, white collar, black morning coat, dark grey trousers, holding a black umbrella.
